Wish I had had more time here. Lots to see and read, pace yourself or museum fatigue will hit you hard! There is plenty of info about JC here, but there is plenty more info about local history and the history of the magnificent building in which the museum is situated. Set aside the whole morning for this place.
The James Cook Museum Cooktown is located in a former convent now a National Trust property. There is an extensive collection of historic artefacts from the local area. A highlight is the Endeavour Gallery which provides an insight into the 7 weeks Cook & his crew spent here. The anchor and a cannon from the Endeavour are on display. This museum is well worth a visit.
Well set out..beautiful old building originally a convent. Something of interest for everyone even if you are not a history fan.
Great museum, very informative staff that know nearly all the local history. A great collection of artifacts.
Some great historic interpretations. Lots of reading not a lot of hands on so great for adults and interested teens but little ones will likely get bored and find the long corridors and stairs more entertaining than the info boards. $15 per adult feels a bit much, and is the only reason they lost a star. They do offer concession prices etc. Be sure to check out the enormous mangoe tree on the corner. It's very impressive and I'm surprised they don't sell fresh mangoes, and mango products here too!Overall definitely worth a look. Just give the kids s good run before taking them inside!
